Salma Hagras Intro to “Talking Colour”
I just completed my work for the Task 1 topic “Talking Colours”, and I can confidently say that I was extremely overjoyed with how it turned out. I think the first project or task you receive can be overwhelming and stressful to say the least, just because you feel the need to prove to yourself that your work is good enough, no matter how simple the task may be. Sometimes the more basic the requirements are, the more stress you drag along with you. Which is why this project was perfect, it was very eye opening and it allowed a certain degree of freedom that was just the perfect amount where you could be just calm enough while you worked bu not too calm to create. I used images that I had collected over the past couple weeks in lockdown, which allowed me to see the beauty in its simplest form, which allowed me to really dive into the objective of the project. I wish I would’ve had access to more resources to be able to create on paper what I was thinking up in my mind, but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed this project.

This blog explicitly explores colour, I like that the artist has not limited herself, and has chosen a bright colour palette with a variation in colour. It seems to include mini series of works: walking through from blue to pink to red-orange hues. She has taken quite a simplistic, stylised approach to her pieces, especially evident in the faces, which makes for a cohesive collection. I especially like the yellow and blue piece, with block colours. This looks like it would translate well printed in a repeat. It’s obvious the artist has tried to experiment with different techniques, such as cutout, however I think this could be pushed further. Perhaps in future drawings could be combined with experimentation with more wet media as a lot of pen and pastel has been used. It would be nice to see a contrast between the line drawings and some more detailed pieces. Overall the blog is exciting to look at and fulfils the brief.
