For the ways of seeing, I was more focused on observing the pattern in nature, and on top of that, I tried to draw those patterns in my own styles. I really enjoy experimenting with different media and try different combinations. For example, I combined watercolor, acrylic, and color marker for one massive line drawing. I made that drawing while I was eating a tangerine. Tangerine is one of my favorite fruits and I want to capture and visualize how it tastes. The reason why there are so many massive lines is that not all the tangerines taste sweet, some of them taste really sour, and I made those massive lines whenever I eat a sour tangerine. However, I do think I can explore more different techniques and tools to create patterns. Maybe like using paper, cards, and folks to do mark making or I can just draw with those tools. I think it might create some interesting textures and shapes.
I really enjoy doing the talking color task, because I get to experiment with different media like acrylic, softpastels, and watercolor. Also, I started to pay more attention to my surroundings, and every little, normal thing become very special to me. Most of my drawing’s inspiration is from my daily life, for example, people walking on the street, working out in the gym room, and flowers that I saw in the park. I also tried to draw in different styles, and get out of my comfort zone. Every color and shape that I used in the drawing is based on the vibe that the objects gave me at that moment. For example, one of my drawings is about my friends doing the partner yoga poses in the gym room, and I can feel a lot of love and youthfulness from their interaction. It reminds me of the rainbow, which is so colorful, shimmery, and giving people hope and energy. So I decided to mimic the shape of a rainbow and draw a lot of repeating curvy lines. For the next task, I will try to observe the object from different perspectives and make it more like a print.

just think that photo this on the back is interesting/special
Since I’m using french press to brew tea so I’m drawing it on tea related objects. Left 1: I intentionally drew it longer so it won’t feel empty on the top and bottom. Marker Left 2: since the texture of the tea bag, the drawing feel fuzzy but I like it kind of creating the ‘tea feel’/chill?

Garlic. Colour pencil+tracing paper (TC)
Right: I like the contrast of the inner onion and outer colour, also the rod is standing out from the purple(though i didn’t draw it to make it feel that way). I used colour pencil and a layer of tracing paper since the colour or the outer part of the garlic has the same colour as the paper, so i didn’t know how to shade it, so i just cut out the shape from tracing paper so it can tells apart from paper. And i did a little bit shading on the tracing paper.

Talking Colours: I found it hard to captured colour palettes/schemes in my daily life. It’s because usually only very pop colours will catch my attention and make me feel like I need to capture this. In daily object around me, few colours(scheme) that really amaze me. Usually, only earthy colours appeared in my daily object, whilst special colour combinations can’t be easily found. And due to the quarantine, i missed the chance to go to flower markets and fairs which special colour schemes will more likely to appear in these places. I found that most of the colours palettes I capture using the Pantone app are usually artificial stuff. For example, artworks, posters, cloths, and some of that has to be touch upped so that it feels like a polished colour palettes, which colours in the palettes are compliment each other, and feel like they are the perfect match. And colour palettes I got from photographies are usually been edited/filtered to make it feels like that. So I think it’s kind of difficult to be very sensitive to colour combinations in surroundings when they are not being touch-upped and still in the ‘half-perfect’ stage. Besides, colour always influence by lighting of the atmosphere. In my opinion, colours under rainy or cloudy days is not as stunning as in the sunny days and brighter atmosphere can bring out more colours.
Talking Patterns: I really enjoyed doing these way of seeing tasks because I really enjoy observing pattern hidden in our daily object. I have this habit of capturing patterns and colours with camera into my phone before this task , but I will never take it out and put it into further development. Another reason of that is I’m just too lazy to draw, so i just take a picture. So this unit is offering me a great opportunity to push me into making these observation into actual art/pattern that can be used in future print design. I think it’s really easy to find them in daily object. The most common method I used is to look closer. I got interesting pattern almost every time i look closer to an object. But when that’s a common approach, I think I might miss the patterns that appear when looking from far away. Which I think I should do more of a looking from far away drawing next time. And to go even further on close observation, I would like to observe object with microscope if I have the opportunity to do so. Overall, I think I can do better if i did further development to the finished drawings , for example making them into repeated pattern. Also I should try more liquid media, like acrylic or water colour. I’m just staying in my comfort zone of using hard pen/tips to draw because they are easier to control. Also i should try to capture moving object next time, since they are moving all the time so it might be interesting to see what I can get when an object is changing its form every second.
In task 2, all my 10 drawings inspiration comes from various of the door, when I did research I feel very enjoyable. They have different decorated doors. Sometimes they are shabby, but this kind of shabby give me a kind of visual enjoyable. In particular, I like one of drawing that there are a lot of bright colours, it’s very dynamic. Meanwhile, combined with the experience of task 1,I used many different painting tools and mixed media in this task. In order to show different materials, like the feeling of shabby, I used coloured tapes. These tapes can make the painting look more 3D, and at the same time, I also take many elements of my drawing, and pick some details to development. When researching different doors, I also noticed some old people sitting in front of the door, then I tried to drawing with colour pen, I imagined that they might drink tea or coffee in front of their door.
This series of drawings are inspired from fisherman and fish market. The atmosphere of the seafood market and the variety of fish gave me a visual impact. Their colour are bright, such as red, yellow and blue. In order to express the feeling, I used various of drawing skills. I enjoy drawing pictures from a variety of materials. In addition, I like to use Crayon because of its vivid colour. In addition to the research of fishermen and seafood market, I also found some scenes of fishermen fishing and the tools they used, such as fishing nets. But I met challenge when I drawing fishing nets, it is hard to draw their details, so I use colour pencils. The final outcome of painting is pretty good, can be very detailed to depict, I also change the different colour to draw fishing nets, it is very interesting.
All in all, I enjoy drawing work. In next task, I will more focus on the colour, and use different collaboration. Also use mixed media to development my work.

For this task I used my drawings from ‘Talking Colours’ to help me create and develop patterns, I focused in on areas that I thought had interesting shapes or line movement and separated them out using Photoshop. I do like my outcomes from this task but I feel I could of taken my drawings further, and chosen to do more work that wasn’t digital. Although I never usually use a computer to create work, and so this task was definitely beneficial to my drawing as I now have some knowledge and experience of using Photoshop. I like the colour palette I was working with; I know I could have taken myself out of my comfort zone and gone further with my colour choices but as I was focusing more on pattern I felt I had more freedom with colour to pick shades I wanted, compared to the first task where I concentrated on narrating the colour in more detail. The task ‘Ways of Seeing/Talking Pattern’ helped me to look at the drawings I had already made in a new and different way, I saw the second task as a continuation and development of what I had already produced. I think I could have challenged myself more by drawing from new subject matter or drawing the same items as before but in new styles such as blind and continuous line drawing, this way I could have got a more diverse range of mark making.
This week’s inspiration still comes from everyday life. All the works adopt the skills of collage or painting. In the first sunset, I chose oil painting stick to scrape out powder, rub it on paper with a knife, wipe it with a wet cloth, break out the hole, fill the hole with pigment, and decorate it with aluminum foil. In the second bathroom, I chose to dismantle the bath ball and burn the paper with traces of fire. For the third piece of meat, I chose dried pork, iron wire and paper with traces left by burning with fire. For the fourth chocolate cone, I chose the paper imprint. The fifth loading, expressing the mood of waiting. In the sixth flower, I chose balloons to create. For the seventh flower, I choose oil stick and scraping. The eighth tooth shows the feeling of tooth discomfort. In the ninth mobile phone, I chose scraping. The tenth sofa, I chose the building blocks.
In this task, I use a variety of materials to express the interest that can be found in daily life. All the works adopt the skills of collage and painting. The first is a self portrait of me, I choose beads and cloth paste to try. The second is stone, I choose the coaster and lock to try. The third, fourth and fifth are food. I choose dried meat, dehydrated vegetables, steel ball, shredded squid, fish skin and fish bone to try. The sixth is the view outside the window. The seventh is the village, I choose shells and glue beads to try. The eighth is fabric, I choose staples and coasters to try. The ninth is a bath cap and towel, I choose shells to try. The tenth is creative painting, I choose feather, pipe, lace, clay and PVC to try.
For this task I tried using a combination of drawing techniques with a variety of materials. I used coloured pencils to create loose, flowing lines, and then went over this with black fine liner pens creating more solid and detailed lines. I also used drawing inks to create blocks of colours and interesting shapes. I feel this project helped me to observe my subject matter in a different way and to approach drawing in a much freer way. I mainly looked at flowers when carrying out this task. I think in general I am usually more drawn to organic forms as subject matter for my drawings, so I’m not sure whether I should’ve challenged myself and looked at more structural subject matter, but I feel either way this has helped develop my drawing technique. I really enjoyed this task and I do like my outcomes; however, I feel I didn’t achieve the description of the brief, “Ways of Seeing / Talking Patterns” as well as I did for “Talking Colours”. Now looking at all of my drawings together there isn’t a lot of pattern to be seen and they all look quite similar to me, so I think I should have explored different subject matter a little bit or perhaps used a wider variety of materials. Overall I like my drawings and I really enjoyed this task, it has definitely helped my drawing.
For this task I looked for colour in my day to day life – walking to classes past the Shepherd’s Bush Market, and objects found in my kitchen and room. My main aim for this task was to avoid drawing the outline of objects as much as possible and to focus only on the colours. I have tried to use a wide range of materials to really explore the different ways of recording colour in my drawings. I used acrylic paints, oil pastels, coloured pencils, inks and collage. I really enjoyed using inks for this task and I feel they were the most successful medium for exploring colour as they are vibrant and bright, and can be used to create lively, energetic drawings. I feel that this task helped to loosen up my drawing and help me create more interesting and dynamic outcomes. It helped me see past the physical objects I was drawing and explore colour in a new way with a range of materials. I think that I probably could have used my materials in a more interesting way in some of my drawings, but I am overall happy with my series
Audrey Stephanie Lo: I think the sketches are really eye-catching because of the colour combinations and strong colour contrast. Also, I can see…
